Package: src:linux
Version: 3.7.1-1~experimental.2
Severity: normal

I'm experiencing an issue with my Intel GM945 (i915 driver) based system; a Dell Vostro 1500 laptop.

When booting from a fresh install of Debian Sid, as well as with the 3.7 kernel from experimental, I am usually presented with a black screen after udev in the boot process. Sometimes, although rare, I will be properly presented with a console instead of a black screen.

Adjusting the backlight works fine; I can see it brighten and dim as requested, so those sets of issues appear unrelated. Changing TTYs does not make the problem go away, either. I can still shell into the machine remotely, so the machine is not frozen.

Booting with the kernel parameter i915.modeset=0 drops me at a standard 80x25 console without issue.

I've found two workarounds that allow me to use KMS and be presented with a console:

1) Including the i915 driver in my initramfs.
2) Booting with the kernel parameter video=SVIDEO-1:d.

Further, if I hibernate the machine (suspend to disk) with the black screen, upon restarting I am presented with a console as expected.

There is a relevant upstream bug report which I have commented on here:

It looks like you reported this fixed in 3.8, so I'm closing it
accordingly.

Ben.
