today, the other machine (recognizable by the 945 instead of 964 cpu)
refused to boot the 3.11 kernel as well. It now runs 3.2. It always
stops at this line:

I suspect some kind of timing or driver problem. An attempt to compare
their initrds did not yield anything useful to my (untrained) eye.
