Hi,
I’ve got a pretty decently powered machine at work now, which I use as both
desktop and virtualisation box. I usually just start xlock when leaving,
then can login again in the morning. The system runs the amd64 kernel flavour
but is otherwise fully i386, except for an amd64 chroot (both the chroot and
the main system running sid) for qemu.
This morning, X was not enabled any more, and I sat on tty1. Trying to start
X had no success; this was at roughly 170000. I’m attaching the X server log
in case this helps while diagnosing.
I had a similar problem some days ago with the Linux 3.8 kernel from sid,
except X totally froze (I could see the remains of one of xlock’s animations)
leaving the system locally unusable; I could ssh in, shut down all VMs (thus
interrupting long-running processes on them, which is very undesirable), and
reboot (I did take the chance to run another dist-upgrade, which gave me the
Linux 3.9 kernel).
I tried to disable hyperthreading for a totally different reason, but that
was after the switch to Linux 3.9, and has been reverted since (so, with the
next reboot, will be gone again) as it didn’t have the desired effect of
making the VMs faster. Just in case you wonder about the boot options.
The Linux 3.2 kernel from sid did not use to have these problems. I think
I’ll reboot into 3.2 from wheezy to be able to distinguish between a kernel
and X problem now.
