I've succeeded in sort of working around this problem by means of adding acpi_osi=Linux as a kernel boot option, and adding setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=00 to /etc/rc.local but this is not a complete solution, since when e.g. the screen goes dark because the screen goes dark because for "screensaver" reasons, it is then impossible to recover.
