(gzip -0 isn't really supported). In a quick test gzip -1 doesn't take very long and doesn't increase the size (it actually reduces it by a few KB). And there seems to be a consensus that uncompressed data.tar is correct and should be accepted once some tools are fixed (#718329, #718330, #718331). I'll switch to gzip -1 for now.
