I added rootdelay=5 and the host booted normally.  It's just a timing issue.

It looks like 3.10 is just taking too long.

FYI this hardware is a standard PC motherboard and five ST3500630ASSATA150 disks for the root part. I also have an older PC here withthree disks which I was able to reproduce the problem.


Sounds like bug 678696 is the fix.

Reassign/tag/etc as you feel fit.  Thanks for the hint on 678696.
