Using 3.9.6-1~bpo70+1 from wheezy-backports no single freeze of the graphics happened on my Thinkpad E130 (Core i3, Sandybridge) within the last 4 days. The version of xserver-xorg-video-intel I have installed is the one currently found in wheezy (2:2.19.0-6).
