I was using the linux-image-3.8-2-amd64 kernel (3.8.13-1). Recently,
I tried to upgrade to linux-image-3.9-1-amd64 (3.9.6-1).
My laptop started to become very hot (more than 90° reported by "sensors"
for my cores) even when I do not do anything special (my cpu perfmeter on my
desktop do not show any special activity).
I tried to install the linux-image-3.10-rc7-amd64 (3.10~rc7-1~exp1) package.
When I rebooted, my BIOS stoped the boot due to the temperature... when I tried the 3.10-rc7 kernel a few minutes later, I observe the same behaviour, ie
very hot temperature of cores (and of the laptop itself). Running powertop
reports more than 40W for the battery discharge rate.
I rebooted on linux-image-3.8-2-amd64 (3.8.13-1). In this case, the
laptop temperature is correct, "sensors" reports about 60°C for cores
temperatures and powertop reports about 20W for the battery discharge rate.
So it seems that recent kernels have a bug with respect to the power
management. I put the "important" severity because I think that the bug is
probably dependent on the hardware (ie does not affect everybody) but it
forbids me to use the new kernels.
