Obviously I couldn't continue using this kernel, as mounting and using
this disk is almost the entire *purpose* of this computer (file server).
So I ended up booting into the Lenny kernel instead.  This works,
although I have to tell it the root device manually, presumably due to
incompatibility with Squeeze's udev.

The device in question is a hardware RAID (multiple SATA disks presented
as one SCSI device).  I can attempt to get model numbers and so on if
those are relevant.
