Bug#705635: [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung

Same here.

After upgrade to Debian Wheezy I was unable to start gnome-shell
standard session as my notebook was hanging hard, sometimes the pointer
can still be moved and gnome-shell segfauling.

When there is not hard lock up there are entries in kern.log:

This seem to be those bugs:

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=57136
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=55984

As stated in the above links, the problem is solved in kernel 3.8.

I can confirm that installing linux-image-3.8-2-amd64 (3.8.13-1) from
Sid solves this problem.
