Further info: the messages start exactly at the moment dd completes the
write:

    7808608+0 records
    7808608+0 records out
    3998007296 bytes (4.0 GB) copied, 1059.6 s, 3.8 MB/s

at this point upwards of 1GB of memory are still dirty / in writeback.

The messages stop when dirty / writeback reaches 0.
