Hm, heisenbugs are no fun.  I'm guessing the simplest way forward
is to compare traces of the touchpad detection from the working
and non-working boots.

Please add "i8042.i8042_debug=1" to the kernel command line and
confirm that your kernel log is filled with noise.  IIRC the
interesting stuff happens during boot, so you can might want to quell
the noise afterward by running
"echo 0 >/sys/module/i8042/parameters/debug".
