Newer laptops (especially HP) are build with RT5390R chipset which
use the rt2800 driver. 

This chipset supports hardware antenna diversity. The default antenna
used by this driver has very poor SNR. Upstream has a fix
for selecting the right antenna. 

Please consider applying patch 
0586a11b5cc51413240e6688936e2edac9c2918e
from upstream for wheezy kernels which works OK on my system.
