Some additional information, probably it helps: As stated above, when system freezes power consumption rises by some 30 watts. I now checked under normal operating conditions and it turns out that this value is precisely the same when 2 cores (out of 4) run under full load (checked with seti@home). The odd thing is that CPU-fan regulation also fails during freeze leading to overheating of the CPU.
