Don't know. I suspect a different reason.
Another thing occurred to me. As I was installing / upgrading, I got
a notification about not having the firmware for my r8169 ethernet (which
seemed to work without the firmware). Seems like it would be good to
add a similar notification to people with a radeon. It certainly didn't
occur to me that my video card my be one of the things non-free firmware
had been removed from the kernel for.
