Maybe you are running into some variation on
<http://bugs.debian.org/688711>.  When I ran into it, I gave up on
debugging and switched to 3.6-rc7.  Hopefully there will be a package
of 3.6 soon to try.

How did you test the usb problem without being able to boot?
