Package: initramfs-tools Version: 0.99~bpo60+1 Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, in order to run openvswitch as bridge replacement, I tried to disable the kernel bridge module the usual way: I created a file /etc/modprobe.d/bridge.conf with the content "blacklist bridge" Then I ran update-initramfs The freshly booted machine still had bridge loaded, which interferes with openvswitch working, especially brcompat. I had to remove the kernel module, depmod and update-initramfs to get rid of bridge. I suspect initramfs-tools to ignore the blacklist, because when I just removed the module but didn't run update-initramfs I saw the log message "bridge not found". -- Package-specific info: -- initramfs sizes -- /proc/cmdline placeholder root=UUID=582f6350-7bb1-4dc8-b254-5755e515b48c ro quiet -- /proc/filesystems ext3 ext4 fuseblk iso9660 -- lsmod Module Size Used by nls_utf8 12456 0 loop 22699 0 isofs 35000 0 dm_round_robin 12644 1 xen_gntdev 12953 0 xen_evtchn 12874 1 xenfs 17607 1 ib_iser 31570 0 rdma_cm 31343 1 ib_iser ib_cm 30983 1 rdma_cm iw_cm 13052 1 rdma_cm ib_sa 26388 2 rdma_cm,ib_cm ib_mad 35863 2 ib_cm,ib_sa ib_core 48070 6 ib_iser,rdma_cm,ib_cm,iw_cm,ib_sa,ib_mad ib_addr 12838 1 rdma_cm iscsi_tcp 17628 3 libiscsi_tcp 17399 1 iscsi_tcp libiscsi 35739 3 ib_iser,iscsi_tcp,libiscsi_tcp scsi_transport_iscsi 39200 4 ib_iser,iscsi_tcp,libiscsi crc32c 12656 4 drbd 191530 5 lru_cache 12880 1 drbd cn 12933 1 drbd iptable_filter 12536 1 ip_tables 21818 1 iptable_filter x_tables 18918 2 iptable_filter,ip_tables brcompat_mod 13005 0 openvswitch_mod 67502 2 brcompat_mod fuse 61427 1 nfsd 218618 2 nfs 313304 0 lockd 66785 2 nfsd,nfs fscache 36129 1 nfs auth_rpcgss 36848 2 nfsd,nfs nfs_acl 12511 2 nfsd,nfs sunrpc 175670 6 nfsd,nfs,lockd,auth_rpcgss,nfs_acl ext4 355363 1 jbd2 60877 1 ext4 crc16 12343 1 ext4 dm_multipath 21939 2 dm_round_robin scsi_dh 13236 1 dm_multipath blktap 23825 0 iscsi_trgt 72390 4 tpm_tis 17315 0 tpm 17841 1 tpm_tis tpm_bios 12903 1 tpm sp5100_tco 12864 0 amd64_edac_mod 22038 0 k10temp 12611 0 snd_pcm 67465 0 snd_timer 22658 1 snd_pcm snd 52458 2 snd_pcm,snd_timer soundcore 13014 1 snd snd_page_alloc 12969 1 snd_pcm i2c_piix4 12536 0 pcspkr 12579 0 edac_core 35035 4 amd64_edac_mod edac_mce_amd 17103 1 amd64_edac_mod evdev 17512 0 joydev 17138 0 i2c_core 23766 1 i2c_piix4 processor 27588 0 thermal_sys 17992 1 processor button 12895 0 ext3 160741 1 jbd 55645 1 ext3 mbcache 12930 2 ext4,ext3 dm_mod 63050 19 dm_multipath raid456 51931 1 async_raid6_recov 12507 1 raid456 async_pq 12559 2 raid456,async_raid6_recov raid6_pq 86619 2 async_raid6_recov,async_pq async_xor 12385 3 raid456,async_raid6_recov,async_pq xor 12556 1 async_xor async_memcpy 12350 2 raid456,async_raid6_recov async_tx 12566 5 raid456,async_raid6_recov,async_pq,async_xor,async_memcpy raid1 30440 2 md_mod 87021 5 raid456,raid1 sg 25769 0 sr_mod 21824 0 sd_mod 35644 17 cdrom 35139 1 sr_mod crc_t10dif 12348 1 sd_mod ata_generic 12479 0 usbhid 39946 0 hid 80937 1 usbhid ohci_hcd 26311 0 ahci 24997 8 libahci 22714 1 ahci pata_atiixp 12729 2 ehci_hcd 39586 0 libata 139579 4 ata_generic,ahci,libahci,pata_atiixp scsi_mod 161684 9 ib_iser,iscsi_tcp,libiscsi,scsi_transport_iscsi,scsi_dh,sg,sr_mod,sd_mod,libata e1000e 128116 0 usbcore 127444 4 usbhid,ohci_hcd,ehci_hcd usb_common 12354 1 usbcore -- /etc/initramfs-tools/modules md_mod raid1 -- /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf MODULES=most BUSYBOX=y KEYMAP=n COMPRESS=gzip BOOT=local DEVICE= NFSROOT=auto -- /etc/initramfs-tools/update-initramfs.conf update_initramfs=yes backup_initramfs=no -- /proc/mdstat Personalities : [raid1] [raid6] [raid5] [raid4] md2 : active raid6 sdc3[0] sdb3[5] sda3[4] sdf3[6] sde3[2] sdd3[1] 3860166656 blocks super 1.2 level 6, 512k chunk, algorithm 2 [6/6] [UUUUUU] md1 : active raid1 sdc2[0] sde2[2] 1951732 blocks super 1.2 [2/2] [UU] md0 : active raid1 sdc1[0] sde1[2] 9763768 blocks super 1.2 [2/2] [UU] unused devices: <none> -- mkinitramfs hooks /etc/initramfs-tools/hooks/: /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks: busybox dmsetup iscsi keymap klibc lvm2 mdadm thermal udev -- System Information: Debian Release: 6.0.5 APT prefers stable APT policy: (990, 'stable'), (100, 'stable-updates'), (100, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 3.2.0-0.bpo.2-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=en_US (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages initramfs-tools depends on: ii cpio 2.11-4 ii findutils 4.4.2-1+b1 ii klibc-utils 1.5.20-1+squeeze1 ii module-init-tools 3.12-2 ii udev 164-3 Versions of packages initramfs-tools recommends: ii busybox 1:1.17.1-8 Versions of packages initramfs-tools suggests: ii bash-completion 1:2.0-1 -- no debconf information

[...] I don't believe initramfs-tools ever loads the bridge module or even includes it in the initramfs unless it's explicitly listed in /etc/initramfs-tools/modules. Something else is doing this. Note that blacklisting in a file only affects loading of modules by udev (or any other time the --use-blacklist option is used), and the bridge module is not requested that way anyway. Something else is directly or indirectly requesting it, for example by running 'ip link add ... type bridge ...'. One obvious workaround would be to put openvswitch and brcompat in /etc/modules.
