Package: initramfs-tools
Version: 0.99~bpo60+1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,
in order to run openvswitch as bridge replacement, I tried to disable the kernel bridge module the usual way: I created a file /etc/modprobe.d/bridge.conf with the content "blacklist bridge"
Then I ran update-initramfs
The freshly booted machine still had bridge loaded, which interferes with openvswitch working, especially brcompat.
I had to remove the kernel module, depmod and update-initramfs to get rid of bridge.

I suspect initramfs-tools to ignore the blacklist, because when I just removed the module but didn't run update-initramfs I saw the log message "bridge not found".

I don't believe initramfs-tools ever loads the bridge module or even
includes it in the initramfs unless it's explicitly listed in
/etc/initramfs-tools/modules. Something else is doing this.

Note that blacklisting in a file only affects loading of modules by udev
(or any other time the --use-blacklist option is used), and the bridge
module is not requested that way anyway. Something else is directly or
indirectly requesting it, for example by running 'ip link add ... type
bridge ...'.

One obvious workaround would be to put openvswitch and brcompat in
/etc/modules.

Ben.
