Good catch.  Sorry for the nonsense.

Now that you mention it, I seem to remember this coming up before
once (for a different reason).  The X server message is not very
clear; is that fixable?

Dawid, could you provide a full kernel log ("dmesg" output) from
booting a woorking and a non-working kernel?
