Given that there is a package in the BTS for the closed nvidia driver,
wouldn't an appropriate response be to ask for bugscript output for
that and reassign?

Not doing so because I haven't read the syslog.  Nicola, please
test with the nvidia driver removed.  If the problem still occurs, I
would be interested; and if it doesn't, please file a new report against
the nvidia-kernel-dkms package.
