Bug#673186: linux-image-3.2.0-2-686-pae: No support for DWA-140 rev.3 wireless (2001:3c15)

Package: linux-2.6
Version: 3.2.17-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,
I've recently bought DWA-140 dongle, expecting it to work
out-of-the-box. But I've
omitted a fact that there are several revisions of DWA-140, with completely
different hardware. So mine is DWA-140 rev.3, which is initially not
working in Debian.

What have I done:
1. Inserted dongle.
2. Nothing interesting happened.
3. Searched web for the first time.
4. Tried the following solutions:
a) modprobe rt2800usb
Effect: no effect, some dmesg general 80211 messages
b) echo "2001 3c15" > /sys/bus/usb/drivers/rt2800/new_id
Effect: incorrect ID or similar message appeared in dmesg.
c) used several versions of /lib/firmware/.../rt2870.bin
Effect: no effect
d) tried 2.6.32 from stable and 3.3 from experimental

What actually worked was compiling Ralink drivers to get rt5370sta. That module
is functional, but not present in Debian.
Debian and internet suggest that correct module for such card (and
others) should be
rt2800usb. In fact, rt2800 sources:
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git;a=tree;f=drivers/net/wireless/rt2x00;h=bae2683595b9dd0906c26117a856e0938d909c0b;hb=HEAD
contain 2001:3c15 USB ID. It should be visible with the following
Debian settings:
CONFIG_RT2800USB=m
CONFIG_RT2800USB_RT33XX=y
CONFIG_RT2800USB_RT35XX=y
CONFIG_RT2800USB_RT53XX=y
Unless "# CONFIG_RT2800USB_UNKNOWN is not set " is needed.
Debian rt2800usb doesn't contain 2001 3c15 (checked with modinfo).

Could you please check:
1. If such model can be enabled by some additional define in Linux kernel?
2. There's additional way to use that device (Debian way, not my
custom kernel ralink driver)?

Additional sources:
1. Ubuntu hardware support page
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HardwareSupportComponentsWirelessNetworkCardsDlink
2. Google search for 2001:3c15, linux, DWA-140, Ubuntu, Debian, ralink
3. Ralink webpage http://www.ralinktech.com/en/04_support/support.php?sn=501

I'm filing this bug as I can't see any other relevant in BTS, so
others may benefit.

Thank you for your time.
