Thanks for a clear report. Does this happen with the squeeze kernel
(2.6.32.y), too?
The squeeze kernel should install without trouble on a wheezy/sid system,
like so:
cp /etc/apt/sources.list sources.list.backup
echo 'deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian stable-proposed-updates main' >>/etc/apt/sources.list
apt-get update
apt-get install linux-image-2.6.32-5-686-bigmem
mv sources.list.backup /etc/apt/sources.list
apt-get update
If it's a regression, we can try to find what change caused it and fix
that. If the bug is present in current (3.3.y or 3.4-rc) kernels, we
can try reporting it upstream and get help from there.
Please also attach full "dmesg" output from booting.
