Package: linux-image-3.2.0-2-486 Version: 3.2.12-1 I tried to install a wheezy 3.2 kernel package on an old lenny box because a bit of USB hardware needed a newish kernel. This almost worked very well, with minimal packages upgraded, but I got this error: Unpacking linux-image-3.2.0-2-486 (from .../linux-image-3.2.0-2-486_3.2.12-1_i386.deb) ... dpkg-deb: file /var/cache/apt/archives/linux-image-3.2.0-2-486_3.2.12-1_i386.deb' contains ununderstood data member data.tar.xz , giving up dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/linux-image-3.2.0-2-486_3.2.12-1_i386.deb (--unpack): subprocess dpkg-deb --fsys-tarfile returned error exit status 2 It seems that the problem is that the version of dpkg in lenny, 1.14.31, does not understand .xz. v1.15.6 is needed for that: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=542160 linux-image-3.2.0-2-486 ought to declare this (or stop using xz so that it can be installed on very old machines, but that's probably not worth doing for this rather obscure case). [...] The dependency is satisfied by an essential package in stable, so this is not a bug.
