Hi Jonathan, I must say that I have had no trouble since I switched to kernel 3.x.I am sorry I did not make the effort of trying different 2.6 versions in order to find out which version introduced the issue. I felt as if not many other people had this problem. I have also an old motherboard which has hardware problems (the audio and one on board network card died which seems to be a great improvement!).
Thank you for your suggestion to try the kernel 3.0. I can keep using this computer that does not perform too bad yet.
