Thanks.  To maybe save others time digging:

 chipset: 855GM (Montara-GM)
 xorg-server 2:1.11.3.901-2
 ddx: intel_drv 2.17.0
 drm and mesa are presumably 2.4.30-1 and 7.11.2-1 respectively.

If you have time to bisect through the kernels at
http://snapshot.debian.org/ to find when the fix was introduced (e.g.,
a good first kernel to try might be 2.6.35), that would be very
useful.
