Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.32-30
Severity: important

I have an HP 6005 workstation with a clean install of Squeeze (64-bit) with the default kernel (2.6.32-5-amd64). The network connection drops periodically, but it comes back if you hit a key on the keyboard plugged into the machine.

Here's one method which I can use to consistently reproduce the problem:

1. I log into the machine via SSH
2. I attempt to transfer a file via SFTP
3. At some point during the file transfer, my SSH session will just hang and all connectivity to the machine is lost (I can't ping it, start a new SSH session, etc.)
4. If I walk over to the physical machine and hit any key on the keyboard, network connectivity immediately resumes, but it usually drops again a few seconds later and I have to hit a key again.

Once the file transfer completes, the network connection resumes working normally. This connection problem seems to happen any time I am doing something fairly network intensive (large file transfer, X11 forwarding, etc.). The connection is stable under a "normal" load (e.g., an SSH session or continuous ping). If I trigger this lock-up behavior and leave it in its "frozen" state for a few minutes, then the problem eventually gets corrected and some messages get logged regarding a CPU lockup condition (see kernel log messages starting at timestamp 442.826956, below).

Onboard NIC is a Broadcom NetXtreme BCM5761 using the tg3 driver.

Thanks.

If you have time to try some kernels between 2.6.38 and 3.2.1 from

applying it to squeeze.)

Sincerely,
Jonathan
