Bug#657098: [regression] bttv dvb_bt8xx bt878 hang on boot unless post: drm

Hi,

I first saw this problem after a routine synaptic update to the latest linux version in
squeeze.
What were the Linux versions before and after? (/var/log/dpkg.log*
might help.)
See below

                                                Creating the file /etc/modprobe.d/bttv.conf
with this content:

softdep bttv post: drm
softdep bt878 post: drm

then update-grub2
resolves the problem. HTH!

Please test without the nvidia driver. If it works, we can pass it to
the nvidia driver maintainers, and otherwise, we will be in much
better shape to investigate this or get help from upstream.

This same problem happened on 3 other computers, none of which have nvidia graphics cards, and it happened on this computer in exactly the same way before loading the nvidia driver. In fact I thought since it looked drm related perhaps going to the non-open driver might solve it, but it changed nothing.

The other computers that had the problem were backend digital video recording systems, old dell optiplex gx110 gx1p and gx200. No add-ins save an DVICO bttv card and a ivtv hauppage 150 each. The all worked fine for a couple years actually, then sooner or later after a reboot they all failed in the exact same way -- the big difference was the change to the boot screen appearance during startup, the 25x80 shifted to the drm/kms and the bt878 died. I'm thinking i2c contention of some sort.

That's a problem locating which linux image update created the issue since reboots didn't necessarily follow updates-- six months between updates and more between reboots was typical. I see the second attempt to fix things with modprobe softdeps November 28th of last year (forcing the bttv to depend on the ethernet driver, just because it loaded later on. Some boots that worked, some boots that didn't. Putting it after drm has made it work all the time on the xw6000). Related, the problem appeared first around 2/19 or perhaps a few weeks earlier last year, it was worked-around then with a drm/kms related modprobe option i915-kms.conf: options i915 modeset=1

Here's a dmesg and lspci on a gx110 that worked for a long time, then failed (not the hp xw6000 I reported about earlier with the same problem). Attached is a tar of dpkg.log on a related system (gx1p).
