Odd.  The viafb problem is probably worth investigating, but let's take
care of the hangs first.

Please attach full "dmesg" output from booting without the viafb module.

Not sure what else to suggest.  Does the nosmp (i.e., the -486) kernel
behave differently?  Did this system work well with lenny before?  If
so, could you try e.g. a lenny live cd to check if it still does?
