so it is impossible to mount /dev/sdi1 

but it works for /dev/sdi

but please could you find either always the same /dev/xx 

my users caqnnot mount it

So this device doesn't have a partition table.  Unusual for a large
device, but not unknown.

No.  SCSI device names are not stable, and it does make a difference
whether a device has a partition table or not.

Put the users in the 'floppy' group and then they should be able to
mount any USB storage using hal/udisks/etc.

In any case, there is no kernel bug here.
