Just to check: does using linux 2.6.38 with the new linux-base,
initramfs-tools, and linux-firmware still reproduce the problem?

If so, we're in excellent shape: a possible next step would be to try
to narrow that distance by using linux-image packages from
http://snapshot.debian.org/ (e.g., running a bisection search to find
the last version that exhibited the problem).
