Now I'm in suspense. Did you get a chance to test the kernel with
Tejun Heo's commit bf2253a6f00e[1] reverted? The method you suggest
should work fine, too, for what it's worth. There are instructions
for patching the kernel and building one flavor at a time at
http://kernel-handbook.alioth.debian.org/ch-common-tasks.html#s4.2.3
