*** Please type your report below this line ***

I have problems with an RTL8169 Gigabit PCI-card.
It works perfect with 100 base, but when i use an 1000 base switch i got massive packet loss.

This problem is well known and normally the solution is to use the driver r8168 instead of r8169.

So I compiled and installed the newest r8168 driver downloaded from realtek.
http://www.realtek.com/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=5&PFid=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false#RTL8111B/RTL8168B/RTL8111/RTL8168%3Cbr%3ERTL8111C/RTL8111CP/RTL8111D%28L%29%3Cbr%3ERTL8168C/RTL8111DP/RTL8111E%3Cbr%3ERTL8168E/RTL8111F <http://www.realtek.com/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=5&PFid=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false#RTL8111B/RTL8168B/RTL8111/RTL8168%3Cbr%3ERTL8111C/RTL8111CP/RTL8111D%28L%29%3Cbr%3ERTL8168C/RTL8111DP/RTL8111E%3Cbr%3ERTL8168E/RTL8111F>

I followed this german instructions here: http://wiki.hetzner.de/index.php/Installation_des_r8168-Treibers

Now the driver is loaded and can be found in the driver list with
|# lsmod | grep r81
r8168 29279 0

|But it is not listed by|
ifconfig -a|

I can only see my onboard 100 base as eth1.
The eth2 for the gigabit-card is missing!
The driver is loaded but the eth is not recognized?

This is what you can see with connected 100 base to eth2:
|root@PC:# ifconfig -a

It seems that many people are affected by this problem.
A solution to solve this problem would really be fine.

Hello,

in the time between the real problem could be identified as "simple" hardware problem.
The network cards are definitely unusable in base 1000 mode.
Indeed it was unbelievable that complete charges of such cards are selled as
Gigabit cards, even if they don't work in base 1000.

The simplest test to evince this, is to test if the network card works in another OS.

I did have 4 of this cards: "Digitus Gigabit PCI 10/100/1000 (DN-1011)"
All of them where not able to work in base 1000 mode!

So i reclaimed them all and now i purchased two "Netgear GA311"
This network cards have also a RTL8169 chip and are working perfectly instant!
They are working also with the standard r8169 driver.

Whenever someone has a packet loss with RTL8169 he should give back the network
card if possible and take another manufacturer.

All other effects seems to be side effects of a damaged or insufficient working
network card.
When the CPU is working always with maximum performance, the broken cards seem to
work a little bit more in base 1000 mode.
What i cannot understand is why the r8168 driver has worked for some people?

I hope that this information with the broken cards is spreaded more so that this
cards are not selled any more.

Regards
Karsten
