I don't think it should be necessary to upgrade the firmware in flash, anyway. There is a version 4.0.556 available on the HP web site, but the description is 'This firmware resolves a hang seen on some P3 adapters.' So I don't think it would fix this problem. I suspect that this is actually a driver bug that may be resolved in a newer version. Can you try installing Linux 2.6.39 or 3.0 from the 'testing' or 'squeeze-backports' suite? Ben.
