Ideally one would like my operating system to notice such a condition
(e.g., using a temperature sensor) and print a helpful message,
refusing to carry on.  If we're lucky, some later hwmon change will
have done exactly that (I haven't checked).  But given the
unpredictability of hardware and difficulty of safely debugging that,
I agree it's best to just close this bug for now.

If you're interested in spending time analyzing post-mortem why that
didn't happen, the lm-sensors@lm-sensors.org list might be a good place.
