Thanks for the pointer. I installed the firmware-ipw2x00 package
yesterday (I also reinserted the module to make sure the new firmware
would be used). Since then I've had two disconnects. The first occurred
just like the ones before. The latter actually made the computer drop
off the WLAN so that network manager knew about it.

ipw2200: Firmware error detected. Restarting.
However I still had to manually reinsert the module for everything to
start working.
