I assume you manually downloaded and installed firmware instead. I suggest you install firmware-ipw2x00, which should have the latest version of the firmware for this device. You may want to copy/move the currently installed files (/lib/firmware/ipw*) first, so that you can revert to them in case the new version is worse.
