I have tried switching from portmap to rpcbind - this change the
errors but did not help.

portmap unfortunately does not work with libtirpc which is the successor
of the glibc sunrpc implementation. So switching from portmap to rpcbind
is a good idea anyway.

Sure

dmesg contains lots of:
RPC: server localhost requires stronger authentication.
then
svc: failed to register lockdv1 RPC service (errno 97)

I guess you don't allow 127.0.0.1 in /etc/hosts.allow? It looks like
rpcbind needs that.

hosts.allow was originally empty, as was hosts.deny
I tried adding this to hosts.allow but it did not help:
ALL: localhost
ALL: 127.0.0.1
