Hello,

Grub is unable to boot 2.6.38 because it cannot find the initrd image for this kernel on /boot. I suppose it's been compiled without --initrd otpion ?

No, this is just a problem with your system.  Perhaps
update-initramfs failed due to lack of space in /boot?  Run:

    update-initramfs -c -k 2.6.38-1-amd64
    update-grub

You may need to remove old kernel packages if /boot is full.
