I was already on the -20 version. Then I tried the -21 recently added to the backports archive, with no change.

After a little experimentation, I found a not-very-good workaround. The first thing I tried was plugging it into a dumb 100Mb/s switch. The link came right up, so I did a little further experimentation. If I turn off autoneg with ethtool, it comes up at 10/half. Basically it will work at anything except for gigabit, and I cannot set speed 1000 if autoneg is turned off. For now, I have hard-set both sides to 100/Full. At this time I do not have another gigabit switch I can try, but I will see what I can do about that. I would like to emphasize that this works without issue on 2.6.30, though.
