Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.32-20~bpo50+1 Severity: important (This report was generated by reportbug, but I couldn't figure out the SMTP settings for GMail.) Over the past few days, after upgrading my kernel from backports, I've noticed that administrative tasks sometimes fail to start. I'm asked to enter the administrative password, "Granting rights" appears in the bottom panel for a few seconds, but then disappears. There are no eror messages in the terminal if I'm attempting to launch form the terminal. I'm using Debian Lenny. This is only an intermittent problem, and if a task does fail to start, it will start on the next attempt. Tasks which have failed to start are: *Launching Synaptic form the System menu. *Launching a root terminal from the Applications menu. *Launching Nautilus with root privileges from a terminal using gksu. The problem has not reappeared after having switched back to the Lenny kernel for two days, so this looks like a backports kernel bug. -- Package-specific info: ** Version: Linux version 2.6.32-bpo.5-686 (Debian 2.6.32-20~bpo50+1) (norbert@tretkowski.de) (gcc version 4.3.2 (Debian 4.3.2-1.1) ) #1 SMP Fri Aug 27 11:29:42 UTC 2010 ** Command line: root=UUID=de16425a-a6ee-4961-878b-3b39252c0c53 ro quiet ** Not tainted ** Kernel log: [ 5.116341] (start_freq - end_freq @ bandwidth), (max_antenna_gain, max_eirp) [ 5.116344] (2402000 KHz - 2472000 KHz @ 40000 KHz), (600 mBi, 2700 mBm) [ 5.116347] (5170000 KHz - 5190000 KHz @ 40000 KHz), (600 mBi, 2300 mBm) [ 5.116350] (5190000 KHz - 5210000 KHz @ 40000 KHz), (600 mBi, 2300 mBm) [ 5.116353] (5210000 KHz - 5230000 KHz @ 40000 KHz), (600 mBi, 2300 mBm) [ 5.116356] (5230000 KHz - 5330000 KHz @ 40000 KHz), (600 mBi, 2300 mBm) [ 5.116359] (5735000 KHz - 5835000 KHz @ 40000 KHz), (600 mBi, 3000 mBm) [ 5.116367] cfg80211: Calling CRDA for country: US [ 5.424256] Marking TSC unstable due to TSC halts in idle [ 5.424370] processor LNXCPU:00: registered as cooling_device0 [ 5.424605] processor LNXCPU:01: registered as cooling_device1 [ 5.435551] input: Power Button as /devices/LNXSYSTM:00/LNXSYBUS:00/PNP0C0C:00/input/input1 [ 5.435563] ACPI: Power Button [PWRB] [ 5.435618] input: Lid Switch as /devices/LNXSYSTM:00/LNXSYBUS:00/PNP0C0D:00/input/input2 [ 5.436712] ACPI: Lid Switch [LID] [ 5.436790] input: Sleep Button as /devices/LNXSYSTM:00/LNXSYBUS:00/PNP0C0E:00/input/input3 [ 5.436799] ACPI: Sleep Button [SLPB] [ 5.436873] input: Power Button as /devices/LNXSYSTM:00/LNXPWRBN:00/input/input4 [ 5.436877] ACPI: Power Button [PWRF] [ 5.452016] Switching to clocksource hpet [ 5.543426] input: PC Speaker as /devices/platform/pcspkr/input/input5 [ 5.608044] intel_rng: FWH not detected [ 5.733402] i801_smbus 0000:00:1f.3: PCI INT B -> GSI 17 (level, low) -> IRQ 17 [ 6.107066] Synaptics Touchpad, model: 1, fw: 6.2, id: 0xa5a0b1, caps: 0xa04713/0x0/0x0 [ 6.129170] ACPI: AC Adapter [AC] (on-line) [ 6.171108] input: SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad as /devices/platform/i8042/serio3/input/input6 [ 6.233830] ACPI: Battery Slot [BAT0] (battery present) [ 6.295430] usbcore: registered new interface driver hiddev [ 6.309387] input: Genius Optical Mouse as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.0/usb2/2-1/2-1:1.0/input/input7 [ 6.309492] generic-usb 0003:0458:003A.0001: input,hidraw0: USB HID v1.10 Mouse [Genius Optical Mouse] on usb-0000:00:1d.0-1/input0 [ 6.309517] usbcore: registered new interface driver usbhid [ 6.309520] usbhid: v2.6:USB HID core driver [ 6.357140] iwl3945: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG/BG Network Connection driver for Linux, 1.2.26ks [ 6.357143] iwl3945: Copyright(c) 2003-2009 Intel Corporation [ 6.357216] iwl3945 0000:03:00.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 17 (level, low) -> IRQ 17 [ 6.357231] iwl3945 0000:03:00.0: setting latency timer to 64 [ 6.631542] input: Video Bus as /devices/LNXSYSTM:00/LNXSYBUS:00/PNP0A08:00/device:00/LNXVIDEO:00/input/input8 [ 6.631595] ACPI: Video Device [VGA0] (multi-head: yes rom: no post: no) [ 6.868058] HDA Intel 0000:00:1b.0: power state changed by ACPI to D0 [ 6.960051] iwl3945 0000:03:00.0: Tunable channels: 13 802.11bg, 23 802.11a channels [ 6.960056] iwl3945 0000:03:00.0: Detected Intel Wireless WiFi Link 3945ABG [ 6.960201] iwl3945 0000:03:00.0: irq 29 for MSI/MSI-X [ 6.968059] HDA Intel 0000:00:1b.0: power state changed by ACPI to D0 [ 6.968075] HDA Intel 0000:00:1b.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 23 (level, low) -> IRQ 23 [ 6.968119] HDA Intel 0000:00:1b.0: setting latency timer to 64 [ 7.196021] usb-storage: device scan complete [ 7.200028] scsi 2:0:0:0: Direct-Access Maxtor Basics Desktop 0122 PQ: 0 ANSI: 4 [ 7.200431] sd 2:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg2 type 0 [ 7.200993] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] 976773168 512-byte logical blocks: (500 GB/465 GiB) [ 7.201614] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Write Protect is off [ 7.201617] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Mode Sense: 2d 08 00 00 [ 7.201620] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through [ 7.202986] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through [ 7.203042] sdb: sdb1 [ 7.217488] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through [ 7.217545] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI disk [ 7.719964] phy0: Selected rate control algorithm 'iwl-3945-rs' [ 7.722004] input: HDA Digital PCBeep as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1b.0/input/input9 [ 9.396194] Adding 2650684k swap on /dev/sda5.
