Package: linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64 Version: 2.6.32-27 Severity: critical Tags: upstream Justification: causes serious data loss I've got an XFS filesystem on a 28T 12-disk raid6 array: Personalities : [raid6] [raid5] [raid4] md0 : active raid6 sdj1[0] sdi1[11] sdh1[10] sdg1[9] sdf1[8] sdd1[7] sde1[6] sdc1[5] sdb1[4] sdl1[3] sdm1[2] sdk1[1] 29302638720 blocks super 1.2 level 6, 64k chunk, algorithm 2 [12/12] [UUUUUUUUUUUU] This is running on a Supermicro X8DT6-F as described below, with a bunch of LSI SAS 2008 cards in the box using the mpt2sas driver. Memory is 24GB ECC registered, tested with memtest86+ extensively. Chassis has dual redundant 1400W power supplies. Today I ran the following script to attempt to benchmark RAID read and write performance: #!/bin/bash for cache_size in 256 512 768 1024 2048 4096 8192 16834 32768; do for i in {1..3}; do echo ${cache_size} > /sys/block/md0/md/stripe_cache_size sync echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches echo "stripe_cache_size: ${cache_size} (${i}/3)" # for write dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/md0 bs=3145728 count=5460 # for read dd if=/dev/md0 of=/dev/null bs=3145728 count=5460 done done as described at http://peterkieser.com/2009/11/29/raid-mdraid-stripe_cache_size-vs-write-transfer/ . Running this script resulted in a number of the following messages appearing in the dmesg log: Dec 22 17:07:48 medusa kernel: [1203244.126187] ffff8802bcb68000: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ................ I rebooted the machine and the filesystem did not mount (the following message was in the log): Dec 22 17:47:09 medusa kernel: [ 51.997696] XFS mounting filesystem md0 Dec 22 17:47:09 medusa kernel: [ 52.207529] XFS: failed to read root inode I then ran xfs_repair on the filesystem in question (xfsprogs 3.1.4). I'm sorry, I don't have the log from running it. After this the filesystem mounted cleanly, but instead of 115000 files spanning 2TB, there are 0 files. I will be checking for hardware faults, but given the absence of any pre-existing problems and the severe nature of the corruption, I would request that this bug report be upstreamed and attempts be made to reproduce this bug given the script above. That will include filesystem structures. The kernel does not stop you writing to a raw device even though there is a filesystem on it. I suggest you use bonnie++ (packaged in Debian) or iozone (not packaged; non-free) for I/O benchmarking.
