There should be some more information in the kernel log; please report
that.

Actually, first try running 'modprobe crc_ccitt' before the insmod
command.

I don't think so.  Whenever we do make an incompatible change, we
increase the 'ABI version' which is the number that appears after the
upstream version above, i.e. currently 5.  We have not made such a
change since package version 2.6.32-12 released in May.

It's quite possible that I made a mistake here but it worked for me.
