This is possibly the same bug as is listed in the nouveau bug tracker at

The symptoms in post number one are very similar to mine down.
It appears this was fixed in Ubuntu kernel 2.6.32-21.31

I'm guessing these patches are in the (very) distant future for Debian
but during the Squeeze install, there should be a script that detects
the affected hardware and reverts to the nv driver or takes other
steps to prevent a failed boot.
