Hi. I've recreated a test-system now (bootstrapped sid, i386). It booted correctly (and I was able to ssh-login) when using the 2.6.32-5-486 kernel. With the same -amd64 kernel it (reproducibly) hanged again. I told this to the friendly Star-Hosting folks, and hope that they'll now make the tests you suggested before.
