I am getting the same issue on a plain debian lenny installation. 

It comes to an kernel panic when formatting 1,5 TB raid1. A kernel panic also occurs if copying a huge amount of data >20 GB  to a non-raid 1,5 TB disk. 
Harddisks and memory should be okay according to SMART / Samsung ES-Tool / memtest.
