That's very strange, then.  As you can see from the pstree in bug #570321, modprobe is not being called with -qb, despite it being in /usr/share/initramfs-tools/init .

I can't find a reference to $MODPROBE_OPTIONS anywhere in /usr/share/initramfs-tools/ nor /usr/sbin/mkinitramfs nor any file listed in /var/lib/dpkg/info/initramfs-tools.list .  I did check the source, but maybe I am looking in the wrong place?
