Bug#575226: firmware-linux-nonfree: firmware shipped in 0.23 cause radeonhd xorg drivers to be unusable with RV770

After an upgrade, X was no longer working properly. It starts but present only a blank screen (while the screen is active, not as if disconnected, according to the relevant LED).

I've made plenty of tests to find out which software upgrade was faulty.

Regarding X, only xserver-xorg-core, xserver-xorg, xserver-xorg-video-radeon was recently upgraded.
But firwmare-linux-nonfree was.

I reverted to previous version of xserver-xorg and xserver-xorg-core. I skipped  xserver-xorg-video-radeon as I use radeonhd driver.

It made no difference.

Then I tried to revert to previous version of firwmare-linux-nonfree. But I found none available (no package of 0.22), as non-free is missing from snapshot.debian.org. I even tried to rebuild it from SVN or source package but it failed (gencontrol.py not working, etc). I would be glad if anyone could point me to such package.

Then I purged firwmare-linux-nonfree and found out that now X was starting as before. 
In fact, I would have achieved the same by setting DRI to off in xorg.conf (that worked too, but not each time), or using the VESA driver.

So now I'm left with X with no hardware acceleration, no composite effects, and it's almost unusable. 

I understand this may well be a bug against xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd, but this package has not been upgraded since january and was working at that time.
