Bug#574795: Libata transition and HPA caused disk size truncation

Then, rebooting with the previous 2.6.32-3-686 kernel i've found these

This is interesting. I think we should apply this same workaround to
libata if possible.

Maybe the following further information can give you more information to think of.

I've rebooted in recovery mode with 2.6.32-4 without the HPA option (the same as my first boot with this kernel) and the fsck message i see is what reported in the "libata_hpa0-fsck-msg.txt" attachment.
Also there are the following files captured under the same condition:
The full dmesg log: libata_hpa0-dmesg-recovery-full.txt
Output of fdisk -l /dev/sda: libata_hpa0-fdisk-l.txt
Output of cat /proc/partitions: libata_hpa0-proc.partitions.txt

Then i've rebooted in recovery mode with the same kernel but with the libata.ignore_hpa=1 workaround and i've captured the same data (hpa1). Ah, the previous fsck message has marked the partition dirty and so during this boot an fsck took place automatically.

In particular you can find interesting the following portion of the above dmesg, cleaned to only show, i hope, interesting information.

You can note that leaving the configurations at its default, the kernel is aware of the HPA, and recognize all my three partitions, but to honour the HPA region make you see only the partions outside HPA.

You say that Debian can enable the same workaround as the old ide but maybe we should first understand why upstream has choosen tho change the kernel behaviour. From my point of view seems that upstream preferred to leave hidden what the manufacturer as choosen to be hidden (rightly or not) and as provided a kernel options to override it, if needed.

Ben, kernel team, i only suggest you to add a check in your migration
script: maybe you can lookup for "Host Protected Area detected" in
dmesg during the kernel install and, if that string is found, you can
show a warning message, informing that there can be problem on the next
reboot. An example:

I don't want to do this. The behaviour should not change. But if we
cannot apply that workaround then I will add some sort of warning.

I understand your point.
It would be better if there are some proc or sys file we can inquiry to obtain the same information. I don't know if it exist.

Thank you very much for you work.

Cesare.
