I've tracked this issue in this instance down to faulty round IDE cables.
I replaced the cables, problem solved. I've seen this A LOT lately however and its mentioned in #550005 so I'm not sure if this is the case for every occurrence of lockups during disk-detect, but it was in this case. You can close this bug.
