Check the manpage. I have never seen mdadm segfault like you describe. Maybe you can change the initramfs hook so that it runs strace (you'll have to copy strace into the initramfs too) and stores the results in /dev/.initramfs/, which will be available after the boot has finished, I think. Other than that, maybe it would make sense if you included the output of /usr/share/bug/mdadm/script 3>&1 run as root and sent it to the bug report.
