While this is not related to compiling official kernel images,
you have to have a script in /etc/kernel/post{inst,rm}.d that can
handle make-kpkg kernels; examples of such scripts are provided in
/usr/share/kernel-package/examples/etc/kernel/post{inst,rm}.d/initramfs
You have to copy these scripts over to the target machine, or
create your own scripts based on those.
